Jill Thompson "The Scary Godmother"
I cannot emphasize enough how scary amazing Jill's work is. The distinct and charming characters, the watercolor paintings, her comic book style, the loving messages she tells through her stories, the perfect Halloween world she has created. SHE IS THE BLUEPRINT. Please check out her website
thescarygodmother.com. I also cannot recommend enough her newest book, "This Was Your Childhood" (2024) which you can purchase through her website, at a participating comic book shop, or through Amazon (for about $35.00). This book is a commpendium of her complete comic works. This book is HUGE and has full color pages of her stunning paintings and so many extra goodies inside. This book is pure magic.
Walter Wick's ISPY Series
What Halloween would be complete without ISPY Spooky Mansion!!! All of the books, the computer games. Oh my word, Walter's work means everything to me. Here is
his website. The surreal fantasy, the absolute magic found in the mundane and cluttered organization. Because of Walter's imagination, I can look at my windowsill of knick knacks, things that found a temporary home, seasonal decor and the landscape beyond, and I can picture a world of fantasy, a hidden skeleton in the shadows, a funny three carved into the wall, the abstract shapes of the woodwork becoming something else entirely. Walter's ability to manipulate space, play with depth, mastery of color, lighting and of course photography, he's created something timeless. Sometimes I wonder if kids these days believe that the pictures he took were real dioramas? Or is it so hard to believe it's not artificially engineered or cut/pasted objects placed together in Photoshop?
Tim Jacobus, Jacobus Studios & Goosebumps
The original Goosebumps Illustrator. Their website
Jacobusstudios.com! I'm sure the inclusion of this one is no surprise by now. I think it's so important to learn the faces behind the things we loved as a kid when we become adults. It's not taking away the magic, but it shows you the ability to make these magical is real and it inspires me with the hopes that someday I can create something as impactful and memorable for a child who eventually grows up.
$10.00 from every poster they sell through the webstore goes to help feed those in need!
